Stretching 192 miles from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Yorkshire coast, the Coast to Coast Walk is one of Britain’s most celebrated long-distance trails. Created in 1973 by renowned fell walker Alfred Wainwright, the route winds through some of England’s most dramatic and diverse landscapes, from the rugged peaks of the Lake District to the rolling hills and limestone valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, and across the heather-topped ridges of the North York Moors before finally descending to the sea.
The journey ends right here at The Bay Hotel, where weary boots meet salt water and stories of the trail are swapped over a well-earned pint. For thousands of walkers each year, dipping their feet into the North Sea at the slipway outside the pub marks the official end of their adventure, a moment of celebration, reflection and relief.
Inside, the walls of The Bay hold decades of Coast to Coast history. You will find signatures, postcards and mementos from travellers who have completed the epic trek, some on foot, others by bike, many returning year after year to relive that final, unforgettable view. Our team has welcomed walkers from every corner of the world, each with their own tale of the journey, the weather and the people they met along the way.
Many choose to stay a little longer to rest, refuel and take in the calm of Robin Hood’s Bay. With its winding cobbled streets, stone cottages and wide open skies, it is the perfect place to end a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whether you are arriving at the finish line or simply visiting to soak up the atmosphere, The Bay Hotel stands as a symbol of achievement, friendship and the enduring spirit of the trail.
The Bay Hotel is proud to be the official finishing point of the Coast to Coast Walk, a place where thousands of walkers each year celebrate their achievement. Inside, you will find the Coast to Coast Register, a special book where travellers from around the world sign their names to mark the completion of their journey.
You can also purchase an official Coast to Coast completion certificate from the bar, a perfect keepsake of your adventure from west to east. Many visitors take a photo outside the hotel with their certificate and boots dipped in the sea, a tradition as old as the walk itself.
Whether you are finishing the walk, planning to begin it or simply visiting to enjoy the atmosphere, The Bay Hotel remains a true landmark at the end of Wainwright’s legendary route.

The Cleveland Way National Trail is another spectacular long-distance path that passes directly through Robin Hood’s Bay, linking the rugged North York Moors with the dramatic Yorkshire coastline. Stretching for 109 miles from Helmsley to Filey, the route combines wild heather moorland, ancient abbeys and clifftop walks with unforgettable sea views.
For many walkers, Robin Hood’s Bay is one of the highlights of the entire trail, a place to rest, refuel and enjoy a well-earned pint while watching the tide sweep across the bay. The path runs just a few steps from The Bay Hotel, making it an ideal stop for anyone walking a section of the route or completing the full trail. Whether you are joining from Whitby, Ravenscar or beyond, our bar, balcony and dock seating provide the perfect setting to pause and take in the view before your next climb along the cliffs.
